At Santa’s North Pole, a large, snowy field sits under the twinkly night sky. Here, shiny ice ribbons curl into frost flowers of all different sizes. Sparkling with bright greens, stunning pinks, and many hues of blue, the flowers grow from the ice like blossoms sprout from a tree. This is the magical place where Frost Pips elf babies bloom.

Inside each flower, the baby elf sleeps, their flower’s nectar giving them the warmth and nourishment they need… until one day they pop from their flower’s petals with bright, curious eyes, to meet the world!

What Happens When an Elf Baby Blooms?

A grown Elf on the Shelf Scout Elf cares for a Frost Pips Scout Elf baby at the North Pole

After the elf babies bloom, they need some of the same care human babies need, like love and cuddles and lullabies…plus they sure do love to play!

Everyone at the North Pole plays with the elf babies, including Santa’s Scout Elves and Elf Mates, who take extra care to make sure the pips get their bottles until their human families adopt them and can continue feeding and playing with them.

Santa’s elves report that the pips, like human babies, make a lot of noise. It’s not uncommon to hear them slurp, burp and cry. But, did you know they also love to coo and hum? When these baby elves decide to sing and hum, everyone at the North Pole stops to listen. It’s a celebration of sounds as their joyous musical notes dance in the air.

What is Their Place in the Human World?

Because Santa gives permission for children all across the world to love and care for the pips year-round, the elf babies are soon ready to leave the North Pole and join a family. Unlike their full-grown Scout Elf counterparts, pips have special permission from Santa to be cuddled and played with because they are sent with their frost flower, which provides the magical nectar that protects and nourishes them.

And because it takes an elf baby a very long time to become full-grown (sometimes 20 years or more!), they enjoy plenty of time cuddling and being cared for by their families.

In their own time, when Santa knows they are each ready, Frost Pips go back to the North Pole, where they attend Scout Elf School and prepare to become one of Santa’s official reporting Scout Elves. They often return as a new reporting Scout Elf for the families who cared for them when they were tiny elf babies.
