Get 7 Spooktacular Halloween Elf Ideas

Spiders and bats and ELVES–oh my! Scout Elves know how to make this holiday spooktacular. They have prepared seven adorable ideas guaranteed to get you in the spooky spirit this All Hallows’ Eve. From decorating your home to preparing for trick-or-treaters, your Elf on the Shelf is ready to create Halloween magic! They’ll even help you relax with a cup of Spooky Snowmen Hot Cocoa Treats after the frighteningly fun night is finished. 

Spooky Scout Elf Headbands

Scout Elves get the party ‘startled’ with ‘eerie’-sistible headgear! (BONUS: Supersize the patterns to create matching Halloween headgear for yourself!)

Materials:

  • Color printer 
  • Construction paper 
  • Pipe cleaners 
  • Googly eyes 
  • Scissors 
  • Adhesive 
  • Optional: Duct tape 

Instructions for Bat:

  1. First, your Scout Elf will use the template to cut the bat shape and headband out of construction paper. 
  2. Second, they will cut bat wing shapes out of construction paper and adhere them to the headband.
  3. Third, your elf will use the printable template to cut paper into the shape of bat ears, a smile, and fangs to create the bat’s features.
  4. Finally, the Scout Elf will adhere silly googly eyes to their bat and place the headband around their head to complete this wicked winged accessory! 
  5. Optional: To secure the headband, your elf might use a strip of duct tape inside the band piece of construction paper.

Instructions for Spider:

  1. Your Scout Elf will use the template to cut the spider headband shape from construction paper.
  2. Then they will cut pipe cleaners into thirds and adhere four to each side of the semi-circle on the inner facing side of the construction paper headband.
  3. Next, your elf will place googly eyes on the semi-circle and place the headband around their head to become a spooktacular spider look-alike!
  4. Optional: To secure the pipe cleaners to the inside of the headband, your elf might use a strip of duct tape inside the band piece of construction paper.  

Instructions for Alien:

  1. Your Scout Elf will begin by cutting out the headband from construction paper using the printable template.
  2. Then they will cut out the circles of graduated sizes and adhere them from largest to smallest to use as the alien’s eyes.
  3. Next, your elf will adhere pipe cleaners to the headband and then attach one alien eye to the opposite end of each pipe cleaner.
  4. Finally, they will place the headband around their head to become an astro-tastical alien!
  5. Optional: To secure the pipe cleaners to the inside of the headband, your elf might use a strip of duct tape inside the band piece of construction paper.

Deck the Haunted Halls

Get ready to deck the haunted halls with spooky streamers and more!

Materials:

  • Color printer 
  • Black construction paper 
  • Scissors 
  • Orange Balloons 
  • Sharpie 
  • Orange crepe paper 
  • Wall-safe adhesive 
  • Optional: Plastic spiders

Instructions:

  1. First, your Scout Elf will blow up several orange balloons.
  2. Next, they will draw silly jack-o-lantern-like faces on them and string them up across a mantle or door frame with orange crepe paper.
  3. Then they use the printable pattern provided and cut out a spiderweb for extra spooky décor!
  4. Lastly, your elf may choose to continue decorating with more Halloween pumpkins and artificial spiders!

Elf Pets Pumpkins

A pumpkin so cute you’ll want to keep it as a pet…an Elf Pet, that is! 

Materials:

  1. Pumpkins (artificial or real) 
  2. Construction paper 
  3. Adhesive  
  4. Scissors 
  5. Child-safe paint 
  6. Optional: 
  • Red Felt
  • Gold Glitter

Instructions:

  1. Your Scout Elf will begin with three pumpkins of any size.
  2. Next they will paint each pumpkin the color of an Elf Pet (one of each).
  3. Then they will use construction paper, scissors, and adhesive to cut and glue on the features of the Elf Pets!
  4. Your elf may go a step further and add a red felt collar with each Elf Pets’ magical golden charm.

Spooky Snowmen Hot Cocoa Treats

Top off your Halloween hot cocoa with these spooky snowmen! 

Materials:

  • Your favorite hot cocoa 
  • Large and medium-sized marshmallows  
  • Orange and black icing 
  • Toothpicks 

Instructions:

  1. First, your Scout Elf will whip up your favorite hot cocoa recipe! 
  2. Second, they will gather marshmallows and use black and orange icing to create spooooky snowmen faces on some while adding snowman arms to others.
  3. Third, they will use toothpicks to secure the marshmallows into stacked snowmen and then stand them up on a plate.  
  4. Finally, they will use these spooky snowmen as adorable Halloween-themed hot cocoa toppers!

Halloween Treat Bags

No tricks—just treats! Beware…Scout Elves may want to eat your candy before you can hand it out to trick-or-treaters!

Materials:

  • Halloween-themed treat bags 
  • Twist ties 
  • Your favorite Halloween candy 

Instructions:

  1. Your Scout Elf may begin by sampling some of your Halloween candy. Careful they don’t eat too much!
  2. Next, they will place your favorite Halloween treats into individual-sized goody bags and close them at the top with a twist tie.
  3. Lastly, your elf will be so happy to watch trick-or-treaters enjoy their hard work!

DIY Elf on the Shelf Trick-or-Treat Bag 

Be the merriest trick-or-treater of all! 

Materials:

  • Paper bag with handles 
  • Construction paper of varying Elf on the Shelf colors 
  • Adhesive 

Instructions:

  1. To begin, your Scout Elf will cut construction paper into the shape of an Elf on the Shelf hat, a face, hair, a collar and facial features.
  2. Next, they will adhere the pieces of construction paper together to create an image in your Scout Elf’s likeness.
  3. Finally, they will adhere the construction paper elf to the trick-or-treat bag and send you on your way to gather plenty of Halloween candy (so they can help you eat it, of course)!

Halloween Scavenger Hunt

Happy Halloween from The Elf on the Shelf! 

Materials:

  • Color printer 
  • Card stock/copy paper 
  • Scissors 
  • A bowl, bucket, or bag to hold Halloween candy (and your Scout Elf) 
  • A cabinet  

Instructions:

  1. First, your Scout Elf will print the Halloween scavenger hunt clues.
  2. Next, they will place them around your home for kids to find and follow.
  3. Finally, your elf will place themselves to be found in the final hiding place—in a cabinet with Halloween goodies!
